Longhairchessies and Colors

Longhairchessies

The forefathers of the Chessies mostly have been loghaired. These genes for longhair are still in some Chessies until now. The gene, that is responsible for log hair, is recessive, that means, that the puppies just can be long haired if both parents have the gene. But you cannot see the gene in the parents. So from time to time there are some puppies in the world with long hair. The length differs.

The recessive gene is given to the childs but not to all puppies of one litter. 20 years ago there were more long haired Chessis than nowadays, because the breeders split the lines to fade off the gene. But as you can see, sometimes it comes back :-)

Colors

The Chessie has a wide bandwidth of colors. You may have a look on the homepages of the German breeders and you’ll find nearly all variants of color.
There are different types of brown, from light to dark brown, in addition there are sedge-colored dogs, they are more within red and deadgrass from light to very dark.
The Brindelhunde are single-colored dark born and after 3 weeks they change the color. Our Joe Joe is one of them; today he is dark dead grass.
Tan point pattern dogs are colored like Rottweiler, Dobermänner or Schweizer Sennenhunde, a very old color, that can only exist if both parents have the gene.
The variants of color of Chessies is enormous and all these color are the standard of the Chessis !!! A Chessi has not to be judged by the color as long as it is a standard color. It the same as with the horses: a good horse doesn’t have a color and so a good dog doesn’t either. Good to know: Some, especially dead grass colored Chessies change their color from light to dark for their whole life :-)
